Hand Dyeing Studio

We opened a studio for hand dyed textiles!

Sweet Paprika Designs and Helios Makerspace are teaming up to offer dye studio access for members who want to work on dyeing projects without investing in all their own tools and equipment.

We’ve put together an amazing team of volunteers to help run this new space and are excited to build this new community.

Equipment list: burners for heating dye baths, electric kettle, microwave, pots, pans, buckets, measuring utensils, squeeze bottles, scales for weighing fibre and dyestuffs, swift, niddy-noddys, and a yarn winder.

How it works

  1. A regular membership is only 30$ per month and gives you access anytime the dye studio is open.

  2. Open hours will be every Thursday from 5:30PM to 9:30PM and one Saturday per month: From 10AM to 6M on Oct 19, Nov 16 and Dec 14.

  3. Members must show that they have experience with textile dyeing to work in the space. That could be through some training that they have done, or if they’ve taken a workshop at our space before. Here is one you can register for now!

  4. Members will have to bring their own materials, but some dye kits and yarns will be available for purchase on site.

  5. We’ll completely clean the space at the end of the night, which means you have to take your projects home with you. If needed you can rent a storage shelf from Helios.

  6. We ask that everyone reserves their visit in advance so that we don’t get too crowded. We’ll post a link for this soon.

  7. For Safety, everyone must

    1. Wear closed toe shoes,

    2. Wear gloves when handling dyes, mordants, or auxiliary chemicals

    3. Wear a respirator or dust mask when handling dye powders

    4. Use hot pads or heat-proof mitts while handling hot pans

  8. We recommend…

    • Bring your own dust mask (some will be available by donation)

    • Wear an apron or lab coat

    • No hand or wrist jewellery (rings, bracelets, etc)

    • Long hair tied back
